"...wrapped around your children's arms..."
"The Fire" is a powerful song and music video by recording artist Matthew Stephen. The song follows one of the Chernobyl liquidators from Corbu, Moldova. It was inspired from a story told by a taxi driver during a trip Matthew took from Odessa, Ukraine to Bucharest, Romania in 2016. When "The Fire" (Ukrainian and Russian term for the Chernobyl accident) happened, the Soviet military went across the USSR looking for liquidators. They took 50 men from Corbu, Moldova, a village of 1000 people in 1986, all who had families, to fight "the fire." They brought them back a week or two later and within three years every single one of them died. The liquidators were supposed to make only one trip to the roof of Reactor 4 and receive a high level but survivable amount of radiation. Suspicion was that for productivity reasons some of the liquidators made multiple trips, or were otherwise kept on the roof too long.
Matthew's compelling lyrics, warm vocals and epic music production tell this incredible story. A story that today is all over the front page news as Russia's invasion of Ukraine rages on. I encourage you to listen to the song and watch the video. Additionally, Matthew has another song titled "Blue & Gold" which is specifically about what's going on in Ukraine right now. Matthew is a brilliant songwriter who uses his vast skills to bring attention to people who truly need our help and support.
